Physical charateristics

Male upperparts are crimson, including crown. Underparts dark brown with wite barring, tail black. Female crown is dark brown with white markings. bill and legs dark grey.

Range

South America : Guianas

Habitat

Mangroves, lowlanmds, coffee plantations and swampy forest.

Reproduction

Hole is excavated by both adults in dead stump or tree low above grond (1-3 meter). Clutch size is 1-3 eggs incubated by both parents, male doing the better part. May roost in pairs or with an extra adult from former brood. No further details.

Feeding habits

Forages in trees and scrubs for insects like ants, beetles and caterpillars solitary or in pairs.

Conservation
