This resource is growing all the time, striving to become the definitive source for birders. The project originally started almost 40 years ago as a passion project by a couple of birders from the Netherlands, with books being the main source of information – one of the most important being the HBW series (Handbook of the Birds of the World).
In the 2010s, we finally started moving our observations and documents to the web. Over time, Planet of Birds has grown into a true community of enthusiasts – scientists, ornithologists, field researchers, photographers, and birding enthusiasts – who send us much of the material and observation notes. Most of them contribute voluntarily, driven purely by their love for birds and conservation.
What we try to do differently is put a strong focus on conservation, threats, and ongoing efforts to protect bird species worldwide. Our goal is not just to document birds but to highlight the challenges they face and the measures being taken to ensure their survival.
If you feel like joining our small club, please notify us by mail at info@planetofbirds.com. We would love to invite you to share your own bird photographs or provide information on endangered species, especially if you’ve been lucky enough to document them in the wild.
