abstract

The East Canadian High Arctic (ECHA) Light-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla hrota breedsin Canada’s eastern Queen Elizabeth Islands with the great majority wintering on the coastline of theisland of Ireland and smaller numbers on the Channel Islands and the northern coasts of France andSpain. It is protected under the general provisions of the European Union Directive on theConservation of Wild Birds (79/409/EEC) (Birds Directive), the Convention on the Conservation ofEuropean Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention) and the Canada-U.S. Migratory BirdsConvention 1916. The population is listed under Category A2 of the Agreement on the Conservation ofAfrican-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (aeWA), because there are only between 10,000 and 25,000individuals in the population.
